How many times have you been into a store, ordered a bargain, wanted the fantastic sales person to marry into your family because they were so good at what they did; and then waited and waited for the item to actually arrive? When it does arrive it's the wrong specification! What is it with the logistics of retail sales that causes everyone so much angst?

Remember the good old days of fax machines, phones that had cords attached to the wall, and computers that weighed more than a small refrigerator? Recall what our problems were? Running out of fax paper, buying really long extension cords for the phone and waiting for hours for the PC to warm up and process information. Well, welcome to the new era of on line collaboration and serious confusion. Now we have twitter, blogs, forums, wikis, web optimisation strategies - more jargon and more to misunderstand.

"I regret nothing" sings Edith Piaf in one of the most famous songs of the 20th Century. A life lived to the full, with pain and love, joy and sorrow. Yet many of us spend our lives wondering what might have been. Especially the older ones amongst us. Perhaps the following story will help us to focus on what is important.

The media suddenly get it. ETS, CPRS, Copenhagen are complex, difficult and open to challenges, confusion and conflict amongst policy makers. This is not about some "silver bullet" strategy in which we all observe some national carbon price signal. It's about vested interests, uncertainty, and some things unknowable. So what does the T&L sector make of all this? How do we position ourselves? What are our prioirities?

The Commonwealth Public Service comprises some of the hardest working, most dedicated and intelligent people in the nation. Any call to attack them as "fat cats" is playing to the gallery of uniformed opinion. Why is it that when party political stress increases, the public service is the first group under the hammer? We need them at their best, not labouring under unfair criticism and media scrutiny. Give them a break.

Having spent the last decade working on capability building in T&L I think I now detect that more and more groups and people are starting to get the message. From infrastructure policy to supply chain innovations; from a strategy for workforce planning and skills development to a recognition that the next few years are going to deliver us opportunities and challenges on a national scale. I think I hear the sound of people talking about the need to be proactive and not to leave everything to the marketplace. Could it be that we are about to start down the long road to a new T&L industry?

The latest BCA Report on Infrastructure Needs in Australia is yet another well argued case for national priorities, sensible national reforms and lots of bricks and mortar. However, in 150 pages of closely presented ideas, there is not one mention of the skills need to plan, build and operate our national infrastructure. Not one sentence, not one idea or one recommendation. Apparently the environment, social and economic factors at play don't include the workforce. At least not in this Report.

Web 2.0 as a form of social media has been around for less than 4 years, yet there is a sense that that a growing herd of Internet users, consultants and marketing gurus is now stampeding towards the topic. Their noise is deafening. What is less clear is why they are running so hard towards this particular technology. A cynic might suggest it's all about the money, the prestige and the "buzz".

Last week was the annual get together of the Australian Freight Council Network (AFCN) in Canberra; and it coincided with the Quarterly Council meeting of the Australian Logistics Council (ALC) - held at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA). This conjunction of events hopefully heralds a new era in industry networking for the T&L sector.

How many of us have stories about taxi drivers, especially in Sydney? Just when you think that 99 drivers prove that things are getting better, you meet the one that proves they are not getting better. What do you do about it? Complaining is not an option.
